One of the most common treatments for pests is the use of pesticides. Worldwide consumption of pesticides was at 2.6 million metric tonnes in 1995 and this is continuing to rise at approximately 1% yearly. While the majority (80%) of this is used commercially, the remainder is used by the domestic market. This equates to 520,000 tonnes used in households globally.
