As discussed previously water is vital to plant growth and health: water is needed for photosynthesis, to enable the transport materials within the plant, for cell enlargement (influencing the growth phase) and in soft herbaceous plants to enable them to remain turgid. The effect of watering also cools the air around plants, creates humidity (which is important in indoor environments where air is usually dry) and allows new, clean air to enter the potting medium (from the top) as watering expels old stale air from the bottom of the pot through drainage.
