Barriers to Effective Multi-Cultural Relationships

Duration: 2 hours

Learn about barriers to effective multi-cultural relationships. Adherence to a specific technique or method may limit the success of a counselling service. Many cultural groups do not share the values implied by the methods and thus do not share the service providers expectations for the conduct or outcome of the service. To counter these differences, effective service providers must investigate their clients' cultural background and be open to flexible definitions of "appropriate" or "correct" behaviour. The basis of understanding others, however, must be understanding of ourselves.
